Pharrell Williams fait partie de The Neptunes, un collectif de producteurs américains de hip hop, aux côtés de Chad Hugo et Shay. Depuis le milieu des années 90, ils travaillent avec des grosses pointures du genre comme : Jay-Z, Mystical, Noreaga, Kelis ou Ol'Dirty Bastard. En 2001, ils montent avec Shay, le projet N*E*R*D, leur groupe, avec lequel ils interprètent leurs propres titres. Leur premier album In Search Of sort rapidement dans les bacs. Lapdance le premier extrait fait également partie de la bande originale du film Le baiser du dragon.
Le duo produit ensuite la plupart des plus gros albums américains qui ont cartonné, comme ceux de Britney Spears, Busta Rhymes, Nelly ou Justin Timberlake. Collaborant avec Dre ou Timbaland, ils s'attèlent ensuite à un nouveau projet The Neptunes Present...Clones, une compilation, avec des featurings hip hop : Kelis, Nas, Jay-Z, Spymob, Clipse, P. Diddy ou encore Busta Rhymes.
Fort de son expérience au sein de The Neptunes, Pharell Williams sort In My Mind, son premier album solo en novembre 2005. On y retrouve des collaborations avec des artistes tels que Gwen Stefani, Jaÿ-Z et Daddy Yankee.
